Audiovisual translation is the translation of a video into another language, using texts (subtitles) or audio (voice-over).
Transcription consists of extracting the audio to dump it into a written text, so that its subsequent translation is possible. The audio of a video is never directly translated: if there is no original script or subtitles, the transcription of the audio must be done first.
In audiovisual translation, time coding consists of correctly dividing the text into takes; and adding to the transcription some time codes that allow synchronizing text and image adjusting them correctly.
Traditionally, commercial films and documentaries are translated by dubbing or “voice-over”. In Spain it has been a very prosperous and very successful industry, but the technique is complex, expensive and slow. Therefore, subtitles are increasingly used, which have also had a great acceptance in the young population.
Subtitling is the fastest and cheapest way to translate a video and therefore the most used today. In English, three words are used for similar but not exactly the same techniques:
Subtitles: text at the bottom of the screen that reflects the translation.
Caption: indicates the meaning of texts entered in the video.
Display: texts that translate other texts that are displayed on the screen.
How videos are translated using subtitles:
1. Extract the original text (transcription and time coding)
2. Translation of transcribed texts.
3. The third step is the adjustment and synchronization of the subtitles.

How to translate a video step by step?
1. TRANSCRIPTION
If the video has no subtitles or script, it will be necessary to transcribe the audio and generate a text file with the subtitles and their timecodes.
– Verbatim transcription, for publication in court proceedings and expert opinions.
– Natural transcription, which will serve as the basis for translating subtitles.
2. TRANSLATION OF SUBTITLES
Once you have the text file with the original subtitles and their time codes, translation and synchronization with the images follow. It is a complex task, with restrictions:
– maintain the same length of sentences
– maximum 2 lines of text per subtitle
– maximum 40 characters per line
3. TIME CODES AND SYNCHRONIZATION
After translating the subtitles, make adjustments to synchronize the subtitles with the audio and with the images: adjust the input and output times of the subtitles, synchronize the subtitles with the audio, calculate the minimum and maximum duration times respecting the changes of scene, etc.
