What is a birth certificate?
A birth certificate is a document issued by the citizen’s county of origin’s Civil Registry or Consular Registry. This document verifies all the relevant details on the persons birth such as sex, date, time, place, affiliation of the registered, etc.
In recent years, there has also been the possibility to issue electronic birth certificates. Additionally, an electronic stamp from the General Directorate General of Registries and Notaries is included.
The Ministry of Justice specifies on their website who can request a birth certificate and how and where to do it.
In the UK, there are two different types of birth certificates issued:
- Short birth certificates containing only the child’s details
- Long birth certificates including both the child’s and the parents details.
Why translate your birth certificate?
The Sworn Translation of Birth Certificates is useful if you want to get married, process an adoption, register, acquire a residency permit, travel with children to certain countries, work visas, etc. Whenever your birth certificate is in an unofficial language of your country of destination you will need to have a sworn translation of it.

Does the Certified Translation of a Birth Certificate expire?
No, no sworn translation expires, but you must check if the original document has an expiration date. This is important, as if the original document is not valid, it translation will also be invalid for the purpose of the procedures in question.
